40 days of intense, holistic training

The GLDI Warrior Workout Regimen

by Jason Lim

As I wake up from my six-hour hibernation, I get chills of excitement because I know I am going to get a thrill from the stretching drills. Ok, you got me. I was just trying to put a positive spin, but as most of you know, 6 am is not the best time of the day to do a set of 100 jumping jacks that gets you jacked up (whether it is for good or for bad).

Every day 96 disgruntled warriors literally crawl out of their cots to a variety of stretches. Some of our undeserved punishments include bicep bursting stretching, ab ripping sit-ups and a sustained push up position in which the feeling dissipates from your entire upper body. From break dancing to back-breaking yoga, we have stretched every body part and moveable joint. It is no laughing matter as we groan while we stretch our groins. My favorite exercise is the “starburst”. Although the name connotes a soft chewy candy that is sweet, the exercise is everything but enjoyable. While I tenderly hum “Gonna Fly Now,” I jump up in the air as Paul the Marine barks out orders.

Somewhere deep down in my hard-pounding heart I know that it is good for my mind and my body. As much as the rigorous physical activity is important, it is our participation of said activities that is important. We are declaring our bodies as temples for the Holy Spirit. Therefore we endure through the countless number of laps as we gasp for oxygen. So every morning as I wake up to my blaring alarm, I know that my entire body (marinated in Icy Hot), will not enjoy the pain, but will be committed to devote our temples to the Lord.
